Joniskis
Agricultural School
is one of 38 Agricultural schools in Lithuania. It is situated in Joniskis -
a small town in the North of Lithuania. The Joniskis region is a piece of
1152 km2 land. The northern part of the district borders with
Latvia. This border stretches 78 km long. The distance between our town and
our capital Vilnius is 270 km. The district center Siauliai is the nearest
big city. Only 90 km distance separates Joniskis and the airport of Riga in
Latvia. One of main motorways crosses Joniskis as well as a railway
Kaliningradas - Riga.
A
major part of the region is located in the southern part of Zemgala lowland.
Our region is an agricultural area being famous for fertile soils. Those who
grow agricultural products usually specialize in grain crops, sugar beets
and rape.
There
are agricultural industrial branches such as: meat and milk manufacture,
forage production.
In
1987 Joniskis Agricultural School was established. About
400 schoolchildren are studying at our school at present. This is a school
that buzzes with the activity, motivating students to get the best from
their studies under the direction of expert and friendly staff. We have
modern teaching facilities both for theory and practise. We have two
dormitories, the dining room, the cattle-breeding farm - laboratory, the
library-information centre, the modern computer class.
The
school farm covers the area about 100 ha of land. The main function of the
farm is to meet the education and teaching requirements of the school as
well as being farmed commercially. Students use ordinary agricultural
machinery for practise.
After
graduating from basic school pupils are allowed to enter our school. There
they study three years and get secondary education and profession. We offer
a wide range of professions.
After
getting secondary education students from our school and other schools can
enter our college and prepare to enter Agricultural University.
Extracurricular
activities: Two basketball teams (boys and girls), gymnastic group,
theatre, Greek-Roman wrestling is cultivated.
There is an Agricultural Advisory center in our school. It provides together
with our school a lot of seminars and short courses on different
agricultural themes which are run by our teachers and research workers from
Lithuanian higher schools and research institutions.
The
Agreements of Creative Collaboration are signed with Agricultural
University, Cattle-breeding Institute, Lithuanian Agriculture Institute,
Lithuanian Gardening Institute. |

Vilnius
Railway Transport and Business Services School was founded in 1944 October
4. It is the oldest School in Lithuanian. School has its own history and
traditions. Teachers understand their requirements and majority of teachers
have been working there for 15-20 years. Youth is also intelligent and
diligent. School has been preparing the specialist for railway transport for
more than 50 years. As the economical situation in the country has changed,
school decided partially to change its profile. Since 1999 we began to
prepare business services employees. In future we’ll prepare specialists of
Information Technologies.
Railway school was founded in the capital of Lithuanian Vilnius in 1876,
when railway building began in Russian empire and Lithuanian territory too.
There could study teenagers of 14-18 years. Entering School teenagers had to
take two examinations: Russian and Arithmetic. Education was payable and the
students had to pay 10 roubles e year. This school existed in Lithuanian
till 1915. It was moved to Russian. Since 1915 till 1944 there was no
special railway school. At the end of the Second World war, in October 4,
1944 the first vocational school was founded in Lithuanian. It was called
“Railway School ?1”. Later the title of School changed for several times.
1963 – 26th Vocational School.
1969 - 26th Railway Technical School.
1978 - 26th Technical School.
1984 - 26th Secondary Vocational Technical School.
1988 – 11th Secondary Vocational Technical School.
1990 – Vilnius Railway transport and Business Services School.
In 1944 School prepared such specialists: Engine locksmith-repairers, Engine
Driver’s Assistants, Engine firemen, and other railway specialists. School
always tried to provide Lithuanian Railway transport enterprises with
necessary specialists. School prepared such professions:
-
Guards of
international passenger trains.
-
Duty
persons of the station – Cashiers of goods, passengers and luggage
looking-offices.
-
Engine-driver’s assistants of engine, electric and diesel trains.
-
Train
electricians.
-
Carriage
surveyors-repairers of the passenger and goods trains.
-
Locksmiths of train rolling-stock and repairers.
-
Electricians of signal and contact system.
The
educational programs changed due to changing needs in Lithuanian railway.
During the school’s history there were over 20 specialities needful for
railway transport. As the economical conditions changed in Lithuanian
railways, there is no need to have so many railway transport specialists.
School began to cooperate with other social partners. We began to prepare
joiners, transport businessman, employees of insurance offices. Since 2002
we’ll be preparing the specialists of Information Technologies.

The rapid
change in Lithuanian society, a social-economic reform, the process of
integration with Europe is forcing the renovation of the entire Lithuanian
education system. After the Higher Education Law has come into force in
Lithuania in year 2000, the binary system of higher education has been
introduced.
Kaunas College is one of the first state colleges in Lithuania and the only
one in Kaunas region, which have been qualified for implementing higher
non-university studies.
Kaunas College has originated from several colleges after they have merged
when seeking the effectiveness and quality of higher education studies. From
September 2001 and once again from September 2002 and 2003 it was enlarged
when other institutions were integrated into it. Right now Kaunas College
has four faculties and three study centres which carry out 39 study
programs. The number of students during the past few years has increased
from 1200 up to 7200 and now it is the second biggest college in Lithuania.
The institution is undergoing essential changes at present, namely, in the
fields of strategy, human resource development, organisational structure,
management, curricula and quality assurance.
The general plan for the strategic development of Kaunas College is defined
by its mission: to create, accumulate and disseminate scientific knowledge
and cultural values, to foster the uniqueness of natural culture, and to
develop the individual and society. The main functions of the College are to
prepare students for future activities and to develop their creative powers,
critical thinking, and decision-making and business communication skills.
Kaunas College strategy has adopted such European dimensions as fostering
principles of open society, democracy, and study process modernisation,
international exchange.
Studies are organised in 5 faculties and 2 study centres.

Klaipeda Business and Technology College was founded in 2002 on the base of
Klaipeda Higher Agricultural School (established in 1946), Klaipeda Higher
Technical School (1959), and Klaipeda Agricultural Book-keeping School
(1954). In 2003 Kretinga Higher Agricultural School joined the college as a
Kretinga Department.
Klaipeda Higher Agricultural School
The school was founded in 1946 on the base of Raseiniai Agricultural School.
It was subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture. The newly instituted
school was settled in the past mental hospital (currently the building of
students hostile) and Bachman manor house.
The building was severely damaged during the World War II. First students
made desks and the blackboard themselves. The first school year started with
60 students – future agronomists – and 5 teachers. In 1949 the hospital was
reconstructed and fitted to the school needs.
During the period from 1950 to 1990 the site has changed a lot. There was
built a new main school building, students’ hostel and the canteen.
In 1991 the school was renamed as Klaipeda Higher Agricultural School. In
1992 it was joined by Klaipeda Agricultural Book-keeping School. Klaipeda
Business and Technology College was founded in 2002 on the base of Klaipeda
Higher Agricultural School, Klaipeda Higher Technical School, and Klaipeda
Agricultural Book-keeping School.
The school has been graduated by: 1058 agronomists, 3011 zoo technicians,
2653 veterinarians, 1642 technicians. Some of the graduates are famous
Lithuanian people:
V.Inta – founder and the director of the unique Stone Museum in Skuodas,
dr.V.Kydikas – participant of Atlanta and Sidney Olympic Games, a member of
Lithuanian Veterinary Confederation, K.Saja – famous Lithuanian play-writer,
signatory of the Lithuanian Independency Act.
Starting from 1991 the school has become a rather flexible educational
institution. The study programmes have been redesigned to meet current
labour market needs and to provide the graduates with numerous job
opportunities. There appeared new specialities, such as: milk product
technologist, accountancy, green plantation and design, office
administration, transportation by road vehicles, housekeeping, tourism and
hotel administration.
By 2002 Klaipeda Higher Agricultural School was finished by 11000 graduates.
In 2000 Ministry of Education and Science issued the order, introducing a
dual system of higher education in Lithuanian. College – a new institution
providing higher non-university education was established.

The year
2000 opened the door to Utena College. It is a new kind of educational
institution, training professionals in higher non-university education. Two
Schools - Utena Business School and Utena Medical School were joined
together. Both of the schools can look back on a long and proud history.
The road to a college status started in 1991 when a new kind of high schools
was established. Since then not only the name of the schools has changed but
also the image. The technologies at schools underwent rapid improvement, new
classrooms and laboratories have been established, Study programs have been
co-ordinated, new perspective specialities have been developed.
According to newly developed curricula Utena Business School started the
training of embroidery technologists, and Utena Medical School started the
training of social workers. Later, there appeared some new professions that
met the new needs of the market: tourism administration, business and office
administration, law, ergotherapy, dentist's assistant, social pedagogic.
During the recent years some areas have been significantly improved:
classrooms, laboratories, modern informational technologies, teaching and
learning centres that correspond modern requirements, firms for practical
training. All that served as the basis for starting higher non-university
studies. Two Utena schools took part in the contest successfully and all
that resulted in the establishment of Utena College in higher education.
The aim of the organisation is to reach the level of competence, culture and
resources, that would allow the organisation to realise the curricula in a
qualified way, perform scientific research, become recognised among other
national schools in higher education and internationally.
The most important goals are to:
|
|
Create
conditions for acquiring higher education and professional qualification
that corresponds the needs of Lithuanian economy and the development of
science and modern technologies. |
|
|
Develop
scientific applied research necessary for the region, advice local
authority and other subjects. |
|
|
Create
conditions for continuous studies, help local economy representatives in
organising raise of the qualifications and re-qualification of the
people. |
|
|
Educate
society receptive to education and culture, able to work in the
situation of the rapid change of the technologies. |
|
|
Develop
new study programs that would meet the needs of the changing market,
train professionals according to the needs of the society and labour
market. |
|
|
Promote
and support permanent professional development and critical
self-evaluation of the staff by creating possibilities to acquire
desired competence and scientific degree. |
|
|
Implement the strategy of the college, involve employer organisations,
social partners, trade unions, the representatives of local authorities.
|
This is the
beginning of another important step forward. New ideas, noble aspirations
and good intentions are companions in the way.
The two faculties of the college are:
-
The
Faculty of Business and Technologies
-
The
Faculty of Health Care and Social Care.
Over the
course of the years the college attracted a number of new curricula that now
meet the needs of the changing market: business management, tourism
administration, accountancy, law, social work, nursing, social pedagogic,
dental care and ergotherapy.
There are the following departments at the faculty of Business and
Technologies: Department of Economics; Department of Technologies; Tourism
Department and Department of Social Sciences. The faculty realises the
following curricula: Business Management; Tourism Administration;
Accountancy; Law and Embroidery Technology. All these
curricula consist of a three-year cycle. The studies may take usual form -
studying full-time or a student may choose part-time studies.
The following departments there are at the faculty of Health Care and Social
Care: Health Care Department; Social Care Department; Pedagogic Department
and Dental Care Department. The faculty offers the students the following
curricula: Nursing; Ergotherapy; Social work; Social Pedagogic; Dental
technology and Dental Care. The students may also choose different
forms of studying - full-time (Nursing, Ergotherapy, Dental Technology,
Dental Care) and in addition the form of part-time studies (Social Work,
Social Pedagogic). |

During all
the period of its existence the College has been accompanied by rapid pace
of growth in all spheres. The number of students has grown to 1600. What
attracts students to our college? First of all it is attention for
our students, orientation to their needs, and formation of a
harmonious and friendly academic community. Everyone in our college is
provided with conditions for perfection. High quality of the studies is
another relevant factor motivating students to choose our College. Every
year study programmes are being improved taking into account needs of the
labour market; modern methods and forms of teaching are constantly being
introduced. A great attention is devoted to practical learning that develops
competence and practical skills, allows to successfully act and promotes
versatile adjustment to the changing conditions of the environment and
technological innovations. Finally we are working in new and modern
premises. There are favourable conditions for the creative and efficient
work of students and lecturers: modern auditoriums, computer classrooms, a
conference hall, library, a reading room, and two Internet cafes (reading
rooms).
In 1999 we
started international cooperation and today we can be proud that we have
partners from 20 foreign countries. Internationalisation is treated as
integral part of the College broader mission; therefore we take special
pride in the last step – reception of foreign students. Being aware of the
fact that that will of our internationalisation
We see our
student as a future leader, able to successfully act on both: national and
international level, and capable of adjusting oneself to the rapidly
changing environment and requirements of labour market. He/she is an
individual having those skills, abilities and experiences that are essential
for a successful professional life.

Vilnius Law
and Business College is a non-State higher education institution with
prevailing non-university studies. The College was established on 1
September 1998 as Daugvilienė Higher Business School. The foundress and the
director of the College is Mrs Daiva Daugvilienė. On 24 August 2001 upon the
Government decree No. 1036 Vilnius Law and Business College was given the
status of an institution of higher non-university education.
Vilnius Law
and Business College is a modern institution of higher education. Open to
society, it is integrating into both Lithuanian and European systems. The
College is oriented towards the needs and interests of the region as well as
towards the changes in infrastructure and the development of the education
system. The College combines academic activity and scientific research thus
realizing equal relations between teachers and students and implementing
democratic principles
Today there
are 4 faculties at the College: Law, Economics, Informatics and Humanities
with a total number of 2500 students. Every year they are provided with
traineeships at Lithuanian enterprises. Cooperation with Lithuanian
employers and participation in numerous business associations are of great
help here. With the help of employers we constantly renew study programmes,
so that our young professionals could enter the market with the most
up-to-date knowledge.
This year
our first students have gone to study for the bachelor’s degree at the
University of Abertay of Dundee (Scotland) upon a mutual agreement.
Quality
education accessible to everyone is a precondition for the well-being of the
society. Matured democracy and social and cultural advance of contemporary
society depends directly on education. Consistent education, implementing
social, economical and cultural competence and civic consciousness must
become part of a young person‘s life. |

Vilnius College in Higher Education was established in 2000 with the
adoption of a new Law on Higher Education which introduced a binary system
of higher education in Lithuania.
A good basis for the establishment of Vilnius College in Higher Education
was provided by the former higher vocational schools which proved to be the
best at that time in Vilnius: Vilnius Higher Vocational School of
Electronics, Vilnius Higher Vocational School of Economics and Vilnius
Higher Vocational School of Business. Having received the external national
and international evaluation and developed their new study programmes the
former higher vocational schools merged to become a contemporary new higher
education institution - College in Higher Education.
Vilnius College in Higher Education is the largest non-university higher
education institution in Lithuania providing higher non-university education
for the specialists in the areas of informatics, electronics, chemistry,
industry engineering, economics, business management and administration,
health of society, rehabilitation and nursing, veterinary, social work,
national order, philology, education, art, music.
At present Vilnius College in Higher Education consists of 8 faculties:
Electronics and Informatics, Economics, Business Management, Health Care,
Pedagogics, Design and Technology, Art and Agrotechnologies. 40 study
programmes are pursued, among which the most popular in the market are:
Office and Enterprise Administration, Banking, Insurance Management, Tourism
and Hotel Administration, Business Management, Advertising Management, Trade
Management, Information Systems, Finances, Social Pedagogy,
Telecommunications, Computer Programming. The duration of full-time studies
is 3 years and extramural – 4 years. Apart from basic studies short-time
refresher courses are offered. Every year the study programmes are being
revised to respond to the society needs.
The studies in Vilnius College in Higher Education are orientated to
practical application of gained knowledge. Therefore, as compared to
university studies, more attention is paid to practical training, closer
contacts with the world of work. We are members of many associations:
Lithuanian Association INFOBALT, Lithuanian Tourism Association, Lithuanian
Hotels and Restaurants Association, Lithuanian Commerce Association, Vilnius
Chamber of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts. We co-operate with Vilnius
University, Kaunas University of Technology, Vilnius Gediminas Technical
University, Lithuanian University of Agriculture, Lithuanian Veterinary
Academy.
There study more than 10,250 students, work 400 qualified teachers, there
are established good laboratories and study centres in Vilnius College in
Higher Education. Computer centre has 30 computer classrooms with 890
computers. The funds of the college’s library contain about 225,000 copies.
The students spend interesting and purposeful leisure time. Their interests
are represented by the students’ council. There are such organizations as
dancing company “VORUTA”, sports club “VIKAS”. Two basketball teams play in
Vilnius championship, and women handball team Eastcon AG – VIKO became the
national champion in 2002.
Close contacts with our social partners, universities and fruitful
international co-operation enable us to meet the labour market needs.
Vilnius College in Higher Education is the member of the European
Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE), International
Association composed of a network of European Institutions of Higher
Education (SPACE), European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education (ENPHE).
We successfully participate in international EU programmes:
SOCRATES/ERASMUS, SOCRATES/Grundvig, Leonardo da Vinci, students’ and
teachers’ exchange programmes are performed.
Vilnius College in Higher Education is one of the thirteen public
institutions, the founders of Visoriai Information Technology Park.

Kaunas
University of Technology (KTU),
the largest technical university in the Baltic States, is the second largest
institution of higher education of Lithuania. It contains
13 faculties,
library,
high school (gymnasium),
10 institutes,
4 centres.
The highest
decision-making body in the University is the
Senate;
the highest executive body is the
Rectorate.
More
than 17 thousand undergraduate (B.S.) and 450 graduate (Ph.D.) students are
enrolled in KTU's eleven faculties. Undergraduates have a choice of 32
majors, and graduate students may choose among 41 graduate areas of study
leading to the Master's degree and among 17 graduate areas of study leading
to the Ph.D. degree.
KTU's
library , founded in 1923,
houses more than 2 million publications. It houses more than 2 million
publications. In addition to the central library and reading room, there are
6 faculty libraries in Kaunas and Panevezys. The University
publishing house "Technologija" publishes three TO four hundred
TITLES of teaching and scientific publications every year. In 1991, KTU
took the lead among Lithuania's universities in implementing post-Soviet
educational reforms. The current system of studies promotes the conditions
in the University enabling training of specialists with broad profiles
capable of using knowledge from many educational areas to organize total
processes of creation and manufacture, from preliminary research to final
sale. University graduates are able to upgrade and combine existing
technologies as well as invent new ones. They are capable of developing new
prospects in addition to producing already known, yet competitive,
consumer-oriented goods. Throughout the process of reorganization, care has
been taken to intensify and expand research activities, for only studies
with firm foundations in research determine the conditions cultivating truly
mature personalities.
The
training system for all specialists with qualification degrees is based on:
·
profound and comprehensive study of both hard and natural sciences, in
addition to the main engineering subject;
·
thorough study of the humanities and social sciences;
·
liberalized and individualized study of special education subjects divided
into modules and evaluated by credits;
·
open
and competitive selection of module educators;
·
coordination of academic/engineering studies with professional/engineering
studies.
The
applied system of modules and credits
enables the exchange of students with other foreign universities, as well as
integration into the European system of studies. The reformed studies
provide students with the space to develop both their individuality and
responsibility.
The
University of Technology, having freed itself of the restrictive "chains" of
its former engineering specialization, has developed a new understanding of
the interrelation between humanity and technology.
The
main principle is the humanization of technology, the application of all
technical systems to social requirements.
As the University of Technology has reconceived itself, the style and
substance of University studies have changed. Studies and research in the
humanities and social sciences no longer merely complement the standard of
general education, but have become vitally important tools in the creation
of a humanized technology.
We have
signed an important agreement with the other higher schools in Kaunas to
expand educational possibilities at the University. We also broadly
cooperate with high schools, secondary as well as professional schools.
Students may now attend lectures in other higher schools and their
examination and credits taken elsewhere are recognized and counted. This is
a very important step toward the concept of an open university. We are also
working on other measures that will enable higher schools to concentrate on
those branches of study in which they truly excel.
We
consider the influence of the community to be of great importance,
therefore, we combine the traditional aims of the University with the
dynamic needs of the present. We feel that only an open university is able
to attract attention and constructive advice. In our turn, we propagate the
idea of continuous education for society, and many free listeners study at
our University.
We are pleased that having established and disseminated the ideas of study
reform, our popularity among young people is growing and competition for
study positions is stiff.
To make
better use of the material and intellectual wealth of the country,
agreements of cooperation have been signed with the following
institutions and organizations:
Municipality of the City of Kaunas; Administration of Kaunas County;
Kaunas Philharmonic;
Litimpex Bank; Industrialists’ Confederation of Lithuania; the
Lithuanian-German joint venture "Baltic
Amadeus"; Division General S. Rastikis Sergeant School; Research
Institutes of Energy, Architecture, Civil Engineering,
Food,
Mathematics and Informatics,
Agricultural Engineering,
Philosophy and Sociology, Forestry;
Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant; and the joint-stock companies "Ekranas",
"Kauno aviacijos gamykla", "Achema",
"Lietuvos
energija", "Mazeikiu
nafta", "Akmenes
cementas" and "Helisota".
On
January 11, 2002, KTU approved the memorandum on establishment of science
and technology park in Kaunas during the seminar "Perspectives of Science
and Technology Park in Kaunas developing priority scientific areas in
Lithuania".
University scientists not only carry out research, but also publish the
following prominent
scientific journals: "Environmental
Research, Engineering and Management", "Chemical
Technology", "Electronics
and Electrotechnics", "Information
Technology and Control", "Measurements",
"Mechanics",
"Materials
Science", "Social
Sciences", "Engineering
Economics" and "Ultrasound".
KTU
scientists take part in
various international programmes.
International research cooperation and activities are mainly related to
participation in European Community
5 framework, EUREKA,
Cost programmes. In
2002 KTU carried out 27 such projects. Currently KTU actively participates
in process of proposals preparation for
Sixth FRAMEWORK programme,
which started at the end of 2002. In the autumn of 1998 Lithuania jointed
European Community action programme in the field of education SOCRATES.
According institutional SOCRATES/ERASMUS agreement 131 students
studied and 26 lectures gave lectures in EU institutions of higher education
in the academic year 2002/2003. Since 1998 University participate in EC
vocational training action

Klaipėda University was founded on October 5, 1990, at the very beginning of
Lithuanian independence re-establishment under the decision of the Supreme
Council of the Republic of Lithuania. The former faculties of the Kaunas
Polytechnic Institute and Siauliai Pedagogical Institute that had already
been functioning in Klaipėda became the base of the University, with the
Theatre and Music Institute of the Lithuanian Music Academy joining later as
the Faculty of Arts.
During a relatively short period of its existence, the University managed to
overcome a number of obstacles and difficulties, and has been developing
successfully both in terms of quality and quantity. Having started with
three faculties in 1991, at present it has
seven faculties, five institutes and other
structural divisions. The enrolment has grown from 2960 to 8920
students. The teaching staff is represented by approximately 431 professors,
associate professors, lecturers, and instructors. Researchers and artists
from Klaipėda University are well-known both in Lithuania and Europe. The
University offers 56 undergraduate, 9 specialized professional and 49
graduate study programs. Student activities are coordinated by the Student
Union of Klaipėda University.
Universities have always been strongholds of statehood, national spirit,
democracy and freedom, beacons of science and culture. The beacon is an apt
symbol for Klaipėda University. Just like a port beacon, it shows the way to
the safe shore to those fighting the storm and darkness. Our University
welcomes people who are looking for the truth and the good, for happiness
and warmth. It welcomes everybody who wants to see and hear, to think and
create. This is the mission, the wish, and the responsibility of our
University. |

The origin
of Vilnius Pedagogical University can be traced back to 1935, when the first
higher teacher training establishment of Lithuania - the National
Pedagogical Institute - was established in Klaipeda. The Institute was
intended to educate teachers for primary schools and to develop educational
sciences throughout Lithuania. During the 67 years since the institution's
establishment, the Institute underwent numerous changes both in its status
and geographical situation. In March 1939, when Nazi invaded and occupied
the Region of Klaipeda, the Pedagogical Institute was moved to Panevezys and
in the autumn of the same year - to Vilnius. It was then renamed Vilnius
Pedagogical Institute. In 1940, after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania,
teacher training in the country was reformed according to the requirements
raised for the Soviet schools. Due to the introduction of overall compulsory
schooling in Lithuania, the number of students gradually increased at the
Institute. The scale of teacher training expanded in Lithuania, and it
included teaching educators of all the basic subjects for all - type schools
of general education.
Essential reforms of the institution started after the reestablishment of
Lithuania's independence. On 20 May 1992, Vilnius Pedagogical Institute was
named Vilnius Pedagogical University by a resolution of the Supreme council
of the Republic of Lithuania. Afterwards, on 2 July 1992, the Lithuanian
Supreme Council ratified the University's Statute. The first Statute gave
the University the rights of an autonomous institution as well as a new
multilevel system of studies, the power to train scientists and to grant
scientific degrees and titles. The University's rights expanded to a great
degree.
The
institution comprises 8 faculties - those of Physics and Technology; Natural
Sciences, History, Lithuanian Philology; Mathematics; Pedagogy and
Psychology; Slavonic Philology and Foreign Languages. There are 52
departments; 14 scientific divisions (an institute, 2 scientific centres, 11
scientific laboratories); a library; a publishing house; the Centres of
In-Service Teacher Training, Language Teaching, Information, Culture and
Sports; a University Secondary School and an outreach teaching base in
Tamosava for field practice in Biology and Geography.
The changes related to the University's institutional structure were not
limited to changing the name of the Institute. The study system reform
resulted in introduction of two new study levels: Bachelor and Master. The
studies have been liberalised, and students have a relative freedom to
choose curricular subjects at their wish. A new dimension (called the credit
) of the studies sizes in. New academic evaluation estimated in cumulative
marks has been introduced. The system of the students' independent work is
being reorganised at present, as well. The key feature of the university
reform is updating the content of the studies. This is being accomplished
through preparing a new curriculum and revising the list of specialities,
which is done in accordance with the demand and qualification requirements
for the specialist in Lithuania.
The studies are conducted at three levels. The main (undergraduate) levels
of studies, which run for four years, grant the graduates both with a
Bachelor's degree and the qualification of a secondary school teacher. The
second level is the Master's degree studies that take up two more years. The
graduates of the second level are conferred on a Master's qualification
degree and the qualification of a gymnasium teacher. The third level is a
course of three or four year doctoral studies.
12400 students presently study at the University. The number of Bachelor's
degree students is 11645; Master's degree studies embrace 755 students. 34
Bachelor degree programmes and 24 Master degree programmes have been
approved by the Accreditation Board of Lithuania. Full-time students have a
possibility to acquire a second speciality by attending evening courses.
The University has 132 doctoral students.
The University staff consists of 1280 employees; 63 of them are Professors
and Habilitated Doctors and 357 of them - Associate Professors and Doctors. |

The University
of Vilnius, one of the oldest and most famous establishments of higher
education in Eastern and Central Europe, was founded in 1579. Functioning
for a long time as the only school of higher learning in Lithuania, it was a
preserver of cultural and scientific traditions, and has played a
significant part in the cultural life not only of Lithuania, but the
neighboring countries as well. During more than four centuries of its
existence, the University of Vilnius has seen periods of growth and decline,
revival, and closure. The University is a unique witness to the history of
the Lithuanian state.
In 1579,
King Stephen Bathory's charter transformed the Jesuit college, founded in
1570, into an establishment of higher education, Academia et Universitas
Vilnensis Societatis Jesu, the transformation being confirmed by Pope
Gregory XIII. Although being away from other European cultural centers, the
University equaled other famous European Universities and had outstanding
professors and students, some of who were : the poet
Mathias Casimir Sarbievius ; the famous professor of rhetoric and
philosophy Zygimantas Liauksminas; the author of the first history of
Lithuania Albertas Vijukas-Kojelavicius; professor Martin Smiglecki, whose
book"Logics" was very popular in United Kingdom and France, and many others.
The first book in the Lithuanian language on the territory of the Great
Duchy of Lithuania was published at the University. In 1753, the
Astronomical Observatory was set up.
In 1773,
the Jesuit order was dissolved in Europe and the University was taken over
by the secular authority. After Lithuania was annexed by Russia, the
University was renamed into Vilnius Principal School. In 1803, the
University received a new statute and the title of the Imperial University
of Vilnius. Many famous names were associated with the University at that
period: the famous medical men from Vienna Johann Peter Frank and his son
Joseph Frank, the historian and public figure Joachim Lelewel, the poets
Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Slowacki, historian Simonas Daukantas, etc. As a
number of students and professors became engaged in the anti-tsarist
movement, the University was closed down according to the orders of tsar
Nicholas I, and it was not reopened until 1919. Vilnius and its region were
then annexed by Poland, and the University functioned under the Polish
auspices until 1939 by the name of Stephen Bathory University. Among
students of the University at that time was the future Nobel prizewinner
Czeslaw Milosz.
In 1939,
the University was brought back under the control of Lithuania, but in 1940
after the Soviet occupation it was reorganized according to the Soviet
model. In 1943, the University was closed down by the Nazis, and resumed its
activities in the autumn of 1944. Though restrained by the Soviet system,
Vilnius University grew and gained force. Vilnius University started to free
itself from the Soviet ideology in 1988 even before Lithuania regained
independence in 1990. The University got back its autonomy and adopted its
own statute.
The University
of Vilnius has 12 faculties, 8 institutes, 10 study and research centers,
the oldest Library in Lithuania, the University Hospital, an Astronomical
Observatory, a Botanical Garden, a Computer Center, and St. John's Church. |
